Answering Your Questions About Heartworm Disease

Your pet’s heartworm prevention is just as important in the winter months as it is during the summer. Heartworm disease affects both cats and dogs, but can be easily prevented with medications given monthly. During Heartworm Awareness Month, we’re reminding pet owners not to let their guard down when it comes to this serious health issue.

What is heartworm disease?

Heartworm is a serious and potentially deadly parasitic infection spread by mosquitoes. Heartworm disease affects the lungs and heart, causing lasting damage to your pet’s health if left untreated. Even in colder climates where freezing temperatures kill off mosquito populations during winter months, pets can still be exposed to heartworm in the spring and summer.

What are the signs of heartworm?

Early symptoms of heartworm infection in dogs may include a mild, persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue after minimal activity, and weight loss despite normal food intake. Cats may show no signs at all or experience difficulty breathing, vomiting, and lethargy. If left untreated for a long time, heartworm disease can cause organ damage and lead to death in both dogs and cats.

How do I protect my pet?

The best way to prevent your pet from getting heartworm is by ensuring they are up-to-date on their monthly preventive medications. Talk to your veterinarian about the best product for your pet, and make sure to give it as directed every month. Testing is also important–your veterinarian should test your pet for heartworm at least once per year.

Heartworm Awareness Month is the perfect time to recommit to keeping your pet protected from this serious and potentially fatal disease. Talk to your veterinarian about a heartworm prevention plan for your pet and be sure to stick to it. With a little help from you, your pet can stay healthy and happy.
