Exploring Kid-Friendly Pet Care

Studies have revealed that your beloved family pet can significantly impact your child’s social and emotional development in a positive way. As such, involving your child in pet-care responsibilities starting at an early age can be highly beneficial for your pet and child alike. When it comes to mapping out pet-care chores, it can be challenging to determine what is age-appropriate for your child. That’s why we have compiled a list of pet care tasks for specific age groups to help your child safely get involved.

Pet Chores for Children Under the Age of Seven

When it comes to pet chores for children under the age of seven, it’s recommended to ease them into it. Rather than leaving them to handle pet care tasks on their own, have them join you while you tend to your pet’s vital needs. Some ideas to get your child involved with pet care may include:

  • Have them come with you to walk the dog to learn about leash training and the value of physical activity.
  • Have them pour the food after you measure out the pet’s food.
  • Teach them to brush your cat or dog in a gentle, relaxing manner.
  • Encourage your child to play with your pet to promote mental and physical stimulation.

Pet Chores for Children Over the Age of Seven

While supervision is still encouraged, children between the ages of seven and twelve may be able to take on pet chores more independently. Depending on your child’s age and maturity, there are several pet chores that may be suitable for your child to adopt into their routine, including:

  • Take on meal time demands, including measuring, pouring, serving, and cleaning out the bowls.
  • Scooping the cat litter or cleaning up dog waste in the yard.
  • Helping with pet bathing.
  • Practicing commands and training techniques with your pet.
  • Completing vacuuming and laundry to keep your pet’s hair off the couch and rugs, ensuring they have a clean, comfy place to rest.
