Understanding Immunizations for Pets

Humans get various vaccinations throughout their lifetimes to protect them from diseases like measles, shingles, hepatitis B, and polio, but did you know that your pets also need vaccines to protect them from different illnesses? Whether you have a cat or a dog, they need certain immunizations in order to live their healthiest possible lives. This National Immunization Awareness Month, we’re highlighting the importance of vaccinating your pet and how you can get them the immunizations they need.

Pet Vaccines: What You Need to Know

When it comes to vaccines, pet owners are actually required by law to get certain immunizations for their pets. While regulations vary from state to state, cats and dogs are generally required to get vaccinated against diseases like rabies and distemper. These vaccines are usually administered during a pet’s adolescence, although some may need to be updated over the years–just like how humans get a new flu shot every year. There are additional vaccines that are not required by law, but your veterinarian may recommend in order to best protect your pet’s well-being. Some vaccines are also required for pets to go to boarding facilities, training classes, dog parks, and grooming facilities, where they will be in close contact with other pets.

Where to Get Your Pet Vaccinated

In order for your pet to receive their vaccinations, you’ll need to visit your veterinarian. While it may be possible to get immunizations at animal shelters or pet advocacy groups, they may not have the medical expertise necessary to recommend the right vaccines for your pet or administer them correctly. Your veterinarian is the best resource for getting the best immunizations for your pet’s healthcare needs, as well as their overall well-being.
